National Safety Month
NAHB Supports National Safety Month – June 2023
Join NAHB and the National Safety Council in June for National Safety Month, an annual observance to help keep each workers safe on the job. The goal of National Safety Month is to increase public awareness of the leading safety and health risks and decrease the number of injuries and deaths at the jobsite, on the road, and in the home.
Each week in June will focus on a different workplace safety topic. NAHB encourages members to hold brief safety stand downs each week on the designated safety topics.
Weekly Safety Topics
Week 1: June 1-11 – Slips, Trips and Falls
With falls the leading cause of accidents and injuries in construction, this week will focus on reducing slips, trips and falls, falls from heights. NAHB’s Fall Protection Toolkit contains resources to keep your workers safe from falls from ladders, scaffolding, roofs, and other walking and working surfaces. Additionally, NAHB’s Fall Prevention in Residential Construction training course gives users an understanding of the OSHA fall protection regulations and safe work practices to prevent fall-related injuries and deaths. This free online, on-demand course is available on the NAHB website in English and Spanish.
Week 2: June 12-18 – Mental Health and Substance Misuse
We all know the dangers of substance use on the job. But did you know mental distress, stress and fatigue are also impairing? NAHB launched the Member Mental Health and Wellbeing and Opioids in the Home Building Industry initiatives, as well as Video Toolbox Talks on Mental Health Awareness and Substance Misuse, that contain resources to recognize the signs and address impairment, in all its forms.
Week 3: June 19-24 – Trenching and Excavation Safety
In the first six months of 2022, 22 workers died due to the deadly hazards inherent in trenching and excavation work – surpassing 15 total trenching deaths in all of 2021. NAHB’s Trenching and Excavation Toolkit can help protect workers from these hazards. Anyone who wants to prevent trenching and excavation hazards in the workplace can also participate in this year’s Trenching Safety Stand Down June 19-23.
Week 4: June 25-30 – Heat Stress Safety
Workers whose jobs require them to be outside should be prepared to take precautions to protect against possible heat related illnesses and/or injuries. NAHB’s Heat Stress Safety Toolkit and Video Toolbox Talk give employers and workers the tools they need to reduce risk of heat stress hazards when working in high temperatures.
